First off Dapper is the previous LTS to 8.04. Support for it runs out next
June, so even if you could install it, then it would prove to be
unsatisfactory as you could not get updates after that.

You can try to get it to load into text mode so that you can see what is
causing it to freeze. Alt+F1 puts it into text mode as it begins to boot
after grub. Or you can remove the word 'quiet' from the bottom bar just
below the menu. You may have to scroll over to the end to see it. Just
delete that word and press enter.

This way you should see text and be able to watch what is being load and
maybe get an idea what is causing it to stall. It would be good if you
posted computer specs when requesting help. We really can't tell you much
without some clues about what we are working on.
