press ctrl+alt+F1 (or f2, f3 etc) to enter console
login to console
try installing updates via console
by
sudo apt-get update
and
sudo apt-get upgrade
after finishing upgradation, return to GUI by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7

However, i am not sure what is the exact reason for your problem.
