I tried the same thing.  Two internal hard disks, WinXP on one
(primary) and Ubuntu 8.10 on second (slave).  The Ubuntu installer
created the boot loader menu that allows you to choose between
operating systems, but selecting Ubuntu from that menu (or just not
doing anything and allowing Ubuntu to be auto-selected) led to system
lock-up.  I believe it was because Ubuntu was looking for the system
files on the primary drive.

I ended up reconfiguring and reformatting both drives, reinstalled XP
on a primary drive partition and plan to install Ubuntu on a separate
partition on the primary drive.  Second internal drive is now just for
apps and swap space.
