As I thought on it more another part I failed to grasp was the importance of picking up a tile that also allowed me to place the person as soon as I purchased it. I spent my time trying to purchas land pieces that fit into my existing layout but would often leave the character that came with it stranded on the shore.
If I had must purchased more intelligently so that as I got a tile I could also place the person on the island I would have been much better off.
