Hi Jody, Andrea, All

I'd like to share, the working group now has a name. It is known as LocationTech. The web site for it will go on-line later this summer.

As Jody noted below, we knew some obvious software that would be popular/commonly used such as Geotools, JTS, and GEOS. We asked for, and received permission to re-distribute them when they're used by projects hosted at LocationTech. This request was presented along with the approval request for creating LocationTech, which was also approved.

Our IP team gets involved to review dependencies & their licenses as part of reviewing project proposals. Once they have completed their analysis, they'll be in a position to comment on any issues they found and possibly recommendations to address them.

Hi Jody, Andrew,

Small update since it is of interest here.

The location working group got the go ahead from the Eclipse board, along with an LGPL exception
(allowing the use of JTS and GeoTools).

can you please elaborate how they handled the license of the JAI
libraries? Those have a very strange license, which in my opinion
would not be compatible with the EPL.

Is there any report that explains how the different packages and libs
were evaluated?

I think it is mandatory to shade a light on this once for all before we move on.

Ciao,
Andrea

It apparently takes a month or so to set up a working group, so we have August as an estimated timeframe. Once the group has a name it will be easier to talk about and promote our involvement.
