Isn't it ironic that those who say a national language is unimportant and "that we shouldn't spend so much of our precious time on" are precisely doing this -- i.e., spending several hours a day, each time this topic crops up, spreading forth their opinions across various Internet forums?
 
Whether you believe that a national, regional, or global language is important/necessary or not, the notion that there is such a thing as "nature taking its course" in the development of a language is not borne out by historical fact.
