ITURI: AID WORKERS ABDUCTED NEAR BUNIA
General General, Brief

There is confusion over the alleged abduction of three aid workers in Ituri province, north east Democratic Republic of Congo. MONUC (UN Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo) sources have told MISNA that unidentified persons stopped a vehicle carrying three people - a doctor, an engineer working for UNDP (United Nations development Programme) and a representative for a local disarmament committee - in Rulu, 48 kilometres southeast of Kandroma, while they were on their way to Bunia (the provincial capital) on Saturday. The information comes from the vehicles driver, who managed to reach Bunia. The doctor is apparently also safe in the provincial capital. We still have no information concerning the fate of the engineer and the other passenger, specified a MONUC employee in Bunia. UNDP sources contacted by MISNA in New York denied all knowledge of the episode. [LC]
