KAMPALA â Uganda is ranked as having the third
highest fertility rate in the world, a health ministry official has said.
Dr Grace Nambatya the director of research at the Natural Chemotherapeutic
Research Laboratory says that Uganda with a 7.1 Total Fertility Rate
(TFR), is the third highest. The Gaza strip is number one, with 7.6 TFR
while Niger lies in second position with 7.3.
The country
is also the second most fertile in Africa after Niger, according to a 1998
research. Africaâs total fertility rate was 5.4. âUgandaâs fertility rate
is the third highest in the world and 50 percent of our population are
youths. We should discourage early marriages and producing under
13-years,â Nambatya said.
She was
reacting to a call by the newly appointed Mengo Youth minister Sarah
Nakiryowa Kiyingi to the youth to produce more children so as to boost the
kingdomâs population. The minister for Royal Travel, Mr Mukasa Kabuuza,
and minister for Sports, Mr Herbert Ssemakula, who supported Kiyingi spoke
at a party to celebrate Kiyingiâs appointment at Kibinge Guest House in
Kabuusu, recently. |
