Lands in Liberia en Route to Freetown Liberian Observer (Monrovia) NEWS March 29, 2006 Posted to the web March 29, 2006 By Boto K. Bradford Monrovia Former President Charles Taylor has landed in Liberia from Abuja, Nigeria. Mr. Taylor touched down on the RIA tarmac under rainy skies. The helocopter was surrounded by Irish and Jordanian troops. Who are waiting to whisk Mr. Taylor off to Freetown, Sierra Leone from RIA. It is speculated that he will go on to The Hague. He will not enter the capitol city Monrovia. Sources who have visted the UN War Crimes Tribunal in Freetown say it is heavily guarded not just by local police but by international security personnel. "People here were very despondent yesterday upon learning of his escape, but are now very pleased to learn that he has been captured," said Kenneth Best Daily Observer news paper managing director. United Nations security personnel have been vigilantly patrolling the streets of Monrovia, raiding the homes of people suspected of having 'secret meetings'. These include some of Taylor's top generals. Meanwhile, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo met with U.S. President Geroge W. Bush at the White House in Washington D.C. this morning, where he stated that Mr. Taylor was neither a friend of the Nigerian president or state. Obasanjo expressed relief that the issue has been put behind him, but disagreed with the notion that his government had been negligent. "If we had been negligent Taylor would have gotten away," he said. President Bush expressed his appreciation for the decision made by Obasanjo regarding Charles Taylor, which he said was a "signal of your deep desire to have peace in your neighborhood." President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is due to make a statement at 4 p.m. Monrovia time. |
