| Netters! These young American boys and girls, must be commended for their efforts and hard work to bring the suffering of our people, in Northern and Eastern Uganda to the attention of the International Community; in particular to the attention of powers that be in Washington DC and London. Hopefully leaders in Washington DC and London , who have clout over dictator Yoweri Museveni and his NRM Military dictatorship, will take note of such efforts and work by young Americans to highlight our suffering...London and Washington DC leader would then be propelled to impress upon their stooge , Museveni and his regime to bring our suffering to an end by Negotiating with "konny"!! MK Dayton GuluWalk triples goal of money raised to encourage peace talks in northern Uganda | |||

Over 200 community members and UD students took time out of their weekend to walk for peace Saturday afternoon in downtown Dayton. The Dayton GuluWalk was held to raise money for the ongoing conflict in northern Uganda. People participated in this international event in 80 U.S. cities and 14 countries. Our main purpose is to call attention to the events in northern Uganda,
said Emily Nohner, senior political science major, who brought the GuluWalk to Dayton in 2005. The war has now been going on for 21 years. Daytons GuluWalk tripled its original goal of raising $1,000. The overall goal for the international walk was to get 10,000 supporters for a total of $1 million. The first GuluWalk, founded by Adrian Bradbury and Kieran Hayward, took place July 2005 in Canada. The GuluWalk was started to represent the long walk children in Uganda make every day to sleep safely at night. Over 40,000 make the journey at night out of the cities and wake up early to return home during the day and attend classes. In northern Uganda, rebels called the Lords Resistance Army, or LRA, kidnap children and force them to fight, kill and become wives and have sexual relations with soldiers. Peace talks are going on for the first time, and these talks
are considered to be the only hope Uganda has in ending the conflict. The GuluWalk in Dayton began around 11 a.m. and many UD students participated in the performances at the event. A spiritual dance, a song performance and a poetry reading all added to the meaning of the walk. Also, four speakers spent time discussing specific topics in Uganda. All four visited the country and saw firsthand how the conflict is hurting the people. One student, senior Jessica Rapagnani, spoke in Courthouse Square about boys forced to fight for the LRA. Dr. Kristen Cheney of the sociology, anthropology and social work department also spoke on her extensive research concerning Uganda. Around 20 UD students put their time and effort into the GuluWalk and other events on campus concerning the plight in Africa. According to Katharine Bakes, these students held documentary-showing sessions with the film Uganda Rising
four times in ArtStreet. The film contains the background of the events in the country with interviews and stories of those who have lived through it all. During mid-term break, 16 UD students traveled to Washington, D.C., to show their support for the peace talks in Uganda. The students attended Northern Uganda Lobby Day, which spread over two days in the capital city. Monday, we attended speakers and panels discussing Uganda, Nohner said. Tuesday we lobbied to our senators and representatives to support peace talks in the country. Overall 700 people attended the event in Washington D.C. UD students have also been selling T-shirts to raise money. Over 450 shirts have been sold in support of peace in Uganda. The group has been seen in KU selling the shirts and handing out other information on the crisis. People throughout the world have spotted the
need for change in Uganda. U.N. Under-Secretary General of Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland has called the situation in northern Uganda the worlds most neglected humanitarian crisis and one of the biggest scandals of our generation.
