aha, I found the official Cisco part number and googled for it and it's exactly the problem I have
https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2057843 so, basically, you have to buy Cisco approved RAM otherwise you're buggered. my predecessor who set them up remembers them as not problematic. thanks
