Sorry, should have said watch the demand meter for movement as a gauge of
current national consumption.

The frequency meter will  indicate the level of surprise the grid
controllers are under :) They increase the frequency in response to
increasing demand and reduce it in response to drops, As this is largely
done on the advice on an experienced human amongst other things it
basically indicates the level of astonishment of the decision maker as a
virtual number, centred around 50Hz,

Think of a generator RPM slowing down underload and with quite a high
degree of operator lag - you get the idea.
