Hi, I investigated the same problem about a year ago, but it is impossible to tell the browser to use a new window from a webstart launched application. For Internet Explorer, on the client machines you can switch off an option "Browse in same window" (the option can be found in the Windows Explorer - Tools - Options - File Types and look for IE there in the list). It works for applets because there java calls through javascript the native browser "open a _blank window" functionality, as you can see looking at the java source code!
