v highlights characterwise.
V (SHIFT+v) highlights line wise. (ie selects whole line)
CTRL+v highlights columns (really useful for commenting multiple lines)

If you're too lazy to press the Shift key, just 'v' in command mode will
work, too, but it doesn't highlight
anything until you move the cursor.
