One line crontab entry to track your laptop if it is stolen.

What is interesting is the speculation on what to do if it recognizes it's stolen. The article discusses the dangers of a "rm -rf /" type poison pill. What to do? Suppose the machine is behind a firewall?

What occurs to me is some kind of remote-terminal thingie, where the result of a known stolen machine calling in like this would be that you would get a remote signon login into the machine, but it would be initiated by the machine, so it would still work if the machine is behind a firewall. You could then selectively delete files or make noises on the speaker or whatever you want to do to it.

Or put up a local WiFi network named "I'm a stolen computer - call the police"?

Not quite sure how to implement it, however.
