What did your mkdosfs patch do?

I went back and read your old messages, where you said this:

    First, the boot sector has stored in within it, the absolute
    sector offset of the partition, and uses that to calculate where
    to find the begining of the root directory of the FAT filesystem.

I followed the links you sent, but I did not see where in the boot
sector any absolute sector numbers appear.  Could you elaborate?

I certainly believe this, given the dual-boot problems experienced by
people installing Fedora Core 2.  But where did you find this
information?  It, too, was not in the links you sent.
