Well since you ask!

I was able to get this to work using a patched version of mkdosfs, and by moving to FAT32.

From what? I thought that was the default on this project. Lots of posts about later conversion to NTFS buy the Windows installer, etc.

For in-house purposes we can now install completely over HTTPS.
In fact we're scheduled to deploy a really nasty-complex application of ours to a site in India, from our sever in Oregon, using a (heavily) modified version of unattended.

I'll dig up that patch and post it as soon as I get a second. The other posted it to the binutils mailing list in an attempt to get Redhat's attention.

So, I'm curious . . . why are you interested in the "bypass" method?

Mostly instructive reasons. Im going down the road of using Fedora's boot disk and the Anaconda installer since it has so much capability already. Its looking like I can get this to work completely with the stock Fedora (or RH) boot disk and the windows setupmgr.exe tool with no anything extra on board the stock boot disk - it has everything I need and alot more - like your https scheme if desired. That means no modifications to the stock boot disk to maintain which is a huge appeal. My appoach has been to work 'like' unattended does now, eventually using winnt to install the files/cabs, but to do all the system configuration (partitioning, etc) using Anaconda's nice GUI / disk druid / etc. In post intall Id still like to rejoin unattended's game as there's some nice tools

Anyway, if Im to ask Anaconda to do everything, I need to fully understand whats currently done by /etc/master.sh ( I do) and install.pl(so so). Same goes for dosemu (so so) and its scripts (autoexec, etc), or absent that one must understand what winnt does to replace it and dosemu. Your approach to installing the win files using linux means you also must understand what Pat was doing w/ with all these and the consequences of 'bypassing' so I thought a look at your patches would be instructive.
