Certainly, there is something wrong with your installation.
For me it takes about an hour to install XP + Office + many apps (no
hotfixes though - they get downloaded later, automatically, anyway), on
a 100 Mbit network.
Perhaps you could spot the place where it stops longer during the
installation?
Maybe you just download the patches from the internet during the
installation?
