Dana, I have an opinion about "brief through modeling." One of the most
brilliant paradigms of learning I know is one commonly used by NAEYC, which
says all learning proceeds through stages of "use," pretty much irrelevant of
age, topic, experience, or whatever. The first stage of learning in that model
is called "awareness," and that's where I think the "brief, through modeling"
comes in. Often, if a learner is really hooked through becoming aware, they
begin to explore and utilize on their own, so to speak. So, in my mind, brief
through modeling is a perfect place to begin any strategy (or other)
instruction because that's where learning begins and matures to what we hope to
see as ideal use of strategic reading for comprehension. After awareness,
there appears to me to be a stage, sometimes brief sometimes not, where the
learning "incubates" and a child begins the quest "to understand." So, even
though "mentioning" may be often necessary, in my opinion, it's isn't ever
sufficient. But it's a beginning. Sometimes new learning, especially
inference and synthesis, just has to "sit and rest" awhile. Interesting. Too
bad Sharon can't post and flesh out her reasoning. Bev
