Too bad Sharon can't post and flesh out her reasoning. I think what Sharon was most critical of was teaching strategies as separate "skills". What she was endorsing was more talk about books without the labeling of the talk. What I have done with my kindergartners this year, is say, This story reminds me of the time when..., Does this story remind you of anything? Rather than refer to the words "text to self connection" so much. The reason I used to use "text to self connection" is because it is a grade on our kindergarten report card! I would have children yelling out " I have a text to self connection" ( most of them couldn't even pronounce it) but I don't think they got the concept that it was supposed to help them have a deeper understanding of the story. I think that is the thing Sharon objects to. She mentioned teachers who hand out reading worksheets and have students write TtoS, TtoT or TtoW down the margins. I think strategies as skills is what is really on her mind. Nancy **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home.
