Hi Everyone, I was struck by something in chapter one: "If we want to teach reading well, we must first read widely and voraciously." I passionately agree with this but the situation saddens me to some degree. My experiences take me to elementary classrooms and through undergraduate and graduate levels of students. What I find is that people are reading less and watching more and more. The big screen has brought so much literature to life that people don't have to read anymore to capture some of the great classics. I wonder if anyone is engaging in thoughtful conversations about these films. My undergraduate students tell me all the time, "We haven't read that, but we did see the movie." Does this bother anyone else? How can we steer our youth away from these screens? Or should we? Can anyone help me see the good in Hollywood's decisions?
I do think educators are reading more and more- professional reading, especially! I see that students are getting those valuable opportunities to see their teachers as readers. The number of teachers that opt to join before and after school book study groups is amazing. Given the fact that many of these people work full time and have families at home but still manage to read and "build that intellectual muscle" is inspiring! Just look at this chat group! :) I am thankful for this opportunity!
