I too find this conversation quite interesting. From the perspective of a  
special education teacher, I really see that my students struggle with 
language. 
 When I get them as sixth graders they apparently have had years of workbook  
pages and very little real opportunities to experience rich text and develop  
their abilities to process. As I help them improve their language 
understanding,  the total reading process improves.
