Cathy, I think that we can do this best by example. When we model that kind of thinking by referring back and connecting to previously read texts, we show children how important it is to "file the books away in their memory". I find that keeping some sort of visual of previously read books is a great help to my 3rd graders. I have kept the books that have been shared in read-alouds in a basket in the class library. I have also hung brightly colored wide ribbons from the ceiling so that they dangle down along the wall behind my read-aloud chair. For each book that we share as a class, I made a photocopy of the book covers (reduced size) and stapled them to the ribbons. It was a really nice visual for the kids and they seemed to refer to it often. Hmmm...why didn't I do that this year??? I need to make a note of that in my back-to-school file so that I remember it next year!
Thanks for asking such an important question! :) Amy/3rd/KS *** "But I also want them to file the book away in their memory somehow, so that they can call on it when the find another book/poem/event they can connect it too. This is an important building block of learning. How can we build in more schema for that?" -Cathy/DE/K-5 Amy Swan 3rd Grade Teacher Cedar Creek Elementary (913)780-7360 CHECK OUT OUR CLASS WEBPAGE!! http://teachers.olathe.k12.ks.us/~aswancc/ ********************************************************************** CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: This message is from the Olathe District Schools.
