As everyone begins to move into chapter four, here are some things to think
about. Catherine, who is one of the fine ladies helping out with moderating,
may be adding her own thoughts shortly as well...

    * Chapter four is titled "Dwelling in ideas" and it opens with a poem
about Edward Hopper's poem Early Sunday Morning. As we began our discussion,
I suggested that we try to be metacognitive ourselves...what are we doing to
understand as we read? What were you thinking about as you read/studied and
tried to understand these works of art? As Ellin shares her interpretations,
what were you thinking about? Do you see/hear the same things? What do you
think of Hopper's work? What do we have to learn as teachers of
reading/thinking?
    * On page 77, Ellin talks about slowing our pace...allowing students to
dwell in an idea....giving them time to think. What obstacles do you see
that may make this difficult? What could we do to overcome those obstacles?
    * Consider the story of Rita and how the teacher (Kathy) gave this
English Language Learner the very challenging Grandfather Tang's Journey to
read
(p 84-86) What do we learn from this? How does this change or confirm your
thinking about how to match readers to appropriate books?
    * We have had a lot of discussion on this list about teaching reading:
whether or not we were only teaching process or is their a product. Let's
revisit this idea and see if it becomes any clearer as we read on!
To quote Debbie Miller:
Happy Reading!
Jennifer
