OK! Here goes... Some people seem to believe that students leave school because they are unsuccessful. One of Mrs. Keene's assertions seems to be that students who are intellectually challenged will enjoy school. I think these are two opposite points of view. Do you all think that Keene is saying that intellectual challenge will encourage students to love school and stay in school? What has your observation been?
Another question that keeps coming up in my mind is how much of the text a student needs to use to understand. In one chapter there seems to be the idea that readers (viewers of art too) can make up their own meaning. But in another place is says that making meaning includes the author's intended message. I see a contradiction here. Can someone point to the text to show me where I can reconcile this contradiction. Or am I missing something? Can you tell what I think students should be doing? :) Figure 2.3d has the word "anaphora." I looked that word up, and found the definition not very helpful. The closest I can get to the meaning in the figure is a difficultly the reader has in knowing the reference of a pronoun. Is that right? I'll stop for now. I have loads of other questions and thoughts. I'll get to those later. Thanks for helping me through this book. It is the most optimistic book I have ever read about teaching.
