Let me tell you what I plan to do with the new teacher I am coteaching with.
She already has the management in place, but not the understanding of
reading strategies. I am starting her off using the Comprehension Toolkit
lessons.
I am starting with the first unit on metacognition (But you could use any
single strategy that you think would give you the most bang for your buck.) I
will ask her to watch me teach it first before she tries it. Maybe your coach
could come with them and point out aspects of management and good literacy
teaching as they watch you at work. I am going to ask my mentor to come in
frequently at this time to give a running commentary as I teach as that seems
to
be very effective.

As I look through the toolkit lessons with her, I plan to find places that I
could deepen with what I have learned from To Understand. When you debrief
with her, I will talk to her about some of the changes I have made and why.
This is where I expect to be learning too! It will take a great deal of
thinking to make this work.

Naturally, I will take cues from her at first...I don't want to overwhelm
her... but she has to start somewhere...sometimes those detailed lesson plans
of
the Toolkit will support their learning. Then, gradually I will pull in
parts of Strategies that Work and To Understand that apply after the fact.

While you and I seem to learn a lot from our reading and can go apply it,
most teachers tell me they need to see it to make sense of it. So that is
where I will be going with my newbie.
Hope that helps. :-)

Oh, Jennifer, I wasn't offended at all. I'm just confused. I'd love to
give these two the benefit of our learning AND learn from them, but I'm just
not sure how to go about it. I like your suggestions! I'm asking for help!
Do you think it's too hard to start reading To Understand as their first step?
I do like the idea of tying that in with ONE strategy. Thanks!
Hmmmm,
Judy
