That way people don't duplicate corrections, and they see progress in the book which encourages interaction. The version 3 PDF has been version 3 for a while. Maybe the rollout to PDF makes frequent updates painful. I don't think people would mind seeing version numbers 3.0.113 because book writing takes ages. > an edited version of the document file.
