If you do decide to spray your boat, and if you decide to use a two- part product like Awlgrip or other LP (linear polyurethane) products, you MUST invest in a positive-pressure face mask. Even the best respirator won't do it; and don't even think about one of those diddly little paper dust masks.
The catalyst in some 2-pack paints is contains isocyanate - which contains cyanide - and the vapors are completely deadly. Methyl isocyanate was the gas released by the accident at the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, which killed tens of thousands. They're also much smaller molecules than any respirator is designed to trap, which is why a positive-pressure mask is required. Other catalysts in other paints are equally deadly; and spraying is just the most efficient way to put them into the air. Organic respirators won't do it - you need a fresh-air feed positive pressure system. 3M allegedly makes a respirator filter good for isocyanates, but the jury's out on that one. Be sure to read all the Material Data Safety Sheets that come with whatever product you use, and follow them to the letter. We don't want to read here about how the fire department came and tried to give your heart a jump-start but couldn't. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "UnifliteWorld" group.
