You will have to replace the transmissions.  The gear ratio you have is for
318's with 5000 rpm redlines and the diesels will be about half that or less.
Transmissions for sure, probably props as well.  You shouldn't have to replace
the shafts, but they are the cheapest of all the parts you have and I wouldn't
re-use them unless I was REALLY SURE they were straight and in good shape.
It'd be a shame to haul the boat and do all that work and then have to do it
again to replace a shaft or two.

Why not go with 4/53's?  3/53's are a bit small.  Turbo charged 4/53's might
actually get you up on step again.  3/53's will be strickly displacement speeds.

Fuel system should be replaced as well.  I'm sure it's possible to get all the
gas out of the tanks and re-use them, but I don't think I would.

Good luck.

Hello, I am considering converting my 71 33 SS from the standard 318s
to Detroit 353s. I am told that the 353s will bolt up to my paragon
transmissions. I wanted to know if anybody has converted one of these
boats to small diesels and what other modifications need to be done. I
think I would be fine with the 1 1/4 shafts as the engines are only
like 108HP ea.

I have not bought the engines yet and I don't actually know what the
guy wants for them but I bought a complete 318 standard rotation
engine with transmission and V-drive with only 300 hours for $250.00
from him about 4 months ago so I assume I can get the diesels for a
good price. They came out of an old cruzon running but most likely
need to be overhauled. The parts are reasonable for these engines so I
thought it may be a good way to go.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Ken
