Considerations from the other side of the world and in the boonies -- or 
Jakarta..  38ft aft cockpit  2 x 671s ( just turboed to 325 shp.)

 

Our diesel fuel arrives foul.  mud,  water, bugs....etc.

 

My 2 6-71s had old racor filters when I bought the boat.  no glass filter bowls 
etc etc..  tanks with bottoms covered in asphalt ...I buy  Passagemaker 
magazine   when I can find it and it has really good tech articles and 
discussions.  To cut a long story short, now I have a home made fuel polishing 
system ... Oberdorfer 12vdc brushless motor/ gear pump.3 gallons minute. Racor 
filters, the large marine ones.. sorry don't have the references to hand and I 
polish with 2 micron filter elements.

 

For each engine now I have Davies filters,  their oem name:   sold to me by DD 
when they had a sale.  -- They are actually Fleetmaster. I really like them 
because the filter cartridges are set in a transparent dome ON TOP of the 
filter body. . As the filters clog up the diesel fuel level rises in the dome, 
thus it is easy to see the clogging/clogged state of the filters and when to 
change.  As they are FLEETMASTER ,  filter elements are readily aveilable.  
 I use 2 micron elements in these.   I don't use any 2ndary filters.

 

This set up seemed OK,  without fuel clogging problems.   Then I contacted 
Floscan to investigate  fitting a system.  I received very firm advice to run 
30 microns in the primary filters and 10 microns in the screw-ons.   I was 
advised  that with a 2 micron system  I ran the risk of the injectors over 
heating as there was not enough fuel circulating to cool them, also I was 
putting the fuel pump under too much stress.

 

Anybody out there like to comment I sure am confused.......

I have been using the 10's for about eight years. Started out with the 30's but 
let let  far too much stuff through and plugged up the cannister type secondary 
which we changed to a Detroit spin on. The cannister type was really difficult 
to change.
When we purchased our boat it had not been run much and it had a lot of stuff 
in the tanks that really got shook in the Jaun De Fuca straights. It was a 
three day trip from Olympia to the Columbia River mouth.
Since that time the last Racors I had to change was last summer when I got that 
guilty feeling and changed them after 6 years of service.
The fuel we have been getting is much cleaner that what was in the boat at time 
of purchase.
We also had a leak around the flybridge hatch which we solved with an 
enclosure.We also put new rubber backed outdoor carpet down without gluing 
which has worked quite well.
 Can't even think how bad it would be to get an engine out of this boat having 
to nearly disassemble the headliner,drop the chart table,remove bridge carpet 
lift the hatch out and on and on and on.
Make me weak kneed just thinking of it.
