Kerry, the handle/spanner that I found aboard my 42' looks custom made -- as if the previous owner had it made -- maybe after losing the original overboard(?). It has a brass handle and two pins inserted just as needed. I have the opposite problem. The Ideal manual says that if I loosen the drum (using the above mentioned tool) the chain will free-fall. However, I am not able to loosen the drum. I assume that I will have to disassemble the drum and clean it up -- or something.

Yes this is not just as simple as there being too much pressure. The windlass isn't taking up ANY chain. Not even the slack chain. I will give Ideal a call today. Thanks. I was hoping to find a place to get the locker tool locally. It seems pretty proprietary though to that specific winch.
The brake disc are worn or contaminated and will not work correctly.
Ideal Windless is in R.I. and they have parts for your windless.
If you take of the catspin, then the chain grabber that is attached to the bottom drum, turn the drum over and you will see a round brake dick on it and another brake disc on the remaining plate on the windless base. Replace the two discs and then you should be OK. They also sell the locking tool that tightens the catspin up to lock it or let it free run.

Sometimes snugging up on the clutch maynot be the answer. Some winches have a lock to put on the anchor chain to keep it from playing out more chain or line. Ours is a short piece of cable with a hook to grab the chain while the other end is fastened to one of the ears or posts on the winch body.
Will send photos if wanted. Our boat is a 48'YF and weighs 58,000 and we operate in the Columbia River system in Oregon.
There has been times when we were anchored in the Astoria area during some real hard ebbs where there has been 3to4 knots water going by at anchor. The clutch started slipping and as hard as I would tighten the clutch it sill played out chain/line until I started using a stop line or hook.
On the other side when trying to recover the anchor and chain I found it easier to break it loose using the power of the boat.
We brought most of the chain/rode up until we were directly over the anchor. We tied it off and then used the boat to dislodge the anchor and then brought it back to the pulpit.
I think I am rambling again so I will now shut up.
Hope this is somewhat helpful, if not please disregard.

Hey All,
I found out the hard way this weekend that my windlass is slipping. It is the first time I have anchored out since I bought the boat a little over a month ago. I had 75ft of chain out and have a 45lb CQR anchor on her. I had to pull it up by hand. Ugh. It's a 42ft ACMY with a Ideal vertical windlass on it that I assume is stock. I think the clutches are slipping. I checked out the Ideal Windlass website and they had a FAQ. They mentioned a Capstan Wrench for trying to tighten the clutches. The top of the Capstan on my windlass has two small offset holes off center. Not a nut or something you might typically see. Can someone tell me what kind of tool I might need to tighten it? And if I tighten it and it still slips does anyone know a place where I can get the clutches replaced? We are headed to the San Juans at the end of June and were planning on swinging
from the hook the majority of the time. No way am I doing that without a windlass! :)
Thanks,
Kerry
