I had a similar problem until mine just stopped working altogether. Replaced
the sending unit and all is good. The magnets where getting weaker and weaker
is what I was told. Was an easy fix..
Hope that helps.
Monty.

Subject: [UnifliteWorld] squirrelly tachs

I have been dealing with an intermitent tach problem for years. Our
boat a 41YF has Crusader 454/350s. Every now-and-then one of the
tachs, usually the port one, will become free floating, that is, it
will bounce around and not indicate true RPMs. However, it almost
always corrects itself at high RPMs, above 2500.

What's even more weird is the problem will disappear for a long time,
maybe a year or so. Because one tach always works, I first match the
throttle handles and then fine tune by ear so there's no real problem
but, I'd like to fix it anyway.

Anybody have any ideas??
