Are you sure the gel coat is no good? Professionals might shy away from your job because they doubt it will meet your expevtations. I've buffed my boat's hull a couple of times and it ain't easy but the results are worth it. I use a Makita 8" buffer - rotary not orbital - with the usual sheepskin type pad. Smear a small quantity of Fibrelay 200 rubbing compound, or in your case the 100 (whichever is coarser) and buff until it's all gone. Just like sex, repeat if necessary. Every now and then use a scraper to clean the excess compound off the pad. (I used the edge of a sharp rock against the rotating pad last time and it worked very well.)
If you get a shine back, use 3M Liquid Silicone wax available at your marine store. The 3M rep tells me it's the best marine wax they make, even better than their paste wax. I have a 1983 41YF and the shop co-located in Delta Marine quoted me $45K to paint it!!
