For what it's worth, I have a 17' runabout (1996 sunbird) with a 90 hp outboard. I believe the max hp for that boat is 135. There is a plate on the transom or by the throttle that says that, but I have no doubt that your '57 model had no such plate. I would guess that the 85 hp is too much and you need more of a 50 hp, but that advice is worth what you are paying for it. If Gord is reading this, he had a runabout and he would likely know more, see if you can get his attention.
