unfortunately (or fortunately - more later) most winch motors are
converted starter motors.  The "unfortunately" part is that they
aren't designed for continuous use.  Think on how you twist the key on
a starter - 30 seconds, max; while winch motors may be run for several
minutes at a time.  The "fortunately" part of this equation is that
you can pull out the winch motor, take it to a good (emphasis on GOOD)
and reputable auto electric shop, and have it rebuilt, at a reasonable
(though not minimal) price.  Do a Google search for starter rebuild in
your location.
