This sounds like a wiring problem

You might have a poor ground or a poor connection on one of the heavy cables
going to the windlass. Make sure you have the correct or heaver size cable
for the distance you are going from the battery to the windlass. Take a test
meter at the windless motor and have someone activate the windless. See what
the voltage drop is. If it does not stay 12+ volts, it is a voltage problem.

Good luck

Monty,

Is your windlass made by Ideal? You can call them and discuss the problem
with them. And if it is check oil level. Just rebuilt? Maybe something is
binding in the gear housing.

Subject: [UnifliteWorld] electric windlass over heading?

I had a problem with my windlass, it's on my 1979 42dcmy. Ran the battery
down one weekend in a small cove and then when trying to pull up the anchor
the windlass started to smoke. The batteries are fully charged and the
windlass still over heated and started to smoke. So I have just had the
thing rebuilt and on its test run at the dock it started to become so hot on
the end piece that the fresh paint became soft and to hot to touch. The
housing was warm not hot, just the end cap...it ran great other than that
but I'm wondering if that is normal and I just never noticed it before or
maybe I need to replace the two solenoids ??

Anyone have an experience with these?

Thanks.

Monty
