John: from your description it sounds as though have thought of many things but
if it is slow to start and when it does start it smokes, it is a good
indication of possible low compression in one or more cylinders and have you
had the engine tuned up. This would include the setting of the governor,
injector rack, valves and injectors. You also might have an injector that
could be sticking and holding the engine into the no fuel position. Check the
stop lever on the governor and see if the stop lever is not pulling the engine
into the stop position which can affect the start up of the engine. Just some
other ideas to look having worked on hundreds of these puppies.

Just cranks but does not start. I have checked everything...like new fuel
filters, air in pipes, bled the system, had the starter motor rewired to 12
volt, replaced all cables with new ones, etc etc When the engine does start it
smokes a while first but on higher revs clears up. I was wondering if the
compression was perhaps low.

Thanks for your help

I have a 42 ft uniflite with twin Detroit Diesel engines. I have had starting
problems ever since Ive had it. I had the one starter checked and ir proved to
be wired as a 24 volt and not as a12 volt as my system is. Still no luck but
now I am wondering if it was not supposed to be 24 volt. But hoe can the
starter motors be @4 volt and the rest of the system be !2 volt? I have to say
that the port engine starts pretty well. Can anybody advise?

Thanks

John
