I agree with the opinion of repowering with new but the original question was about rebuilding, so I answered that way. ? I couldn't agree more with the idea of repowering with new engines and without question, diesels. New engine technology is more efficient and sometimes lighter and more powerful. A few years ago I saw some nice Yanmars that had more horsepower and torque than the old Cummins 903's in my 42 aft cabin. They were much lighter and of course more efficient. ? With the advancement in outboard engines it wouldn't be out of the question to look at the possibility of repowering with two or three outboards. Getting engines out?in the open where the can be serviced easily, kept out of the water when not being used and?eliminating most of the running gear and?intake through hulls?from the planing surface for more efficiency. A major drawback is that outboards are gas engines which means storing a volatile fuel on your boat. Another drawback might be balance but the 42's are a little bow heavy to begin with and ballast is always available to fix balance problems. ? I need to get a hobby and stop thinking about boats so much...

The replacement procedure on my boat was to lift the engine all the way up through the fly bridge.? I have a map table in the ceiling of the main cabin and I have hatches in the floor.? They just lifted the hatch in the floor out of the way, pulled out the map table in the ceiling and hoisted the engine straight up and out. My engines are V8 diesels, but there is a 42 with 454s that has been for sale in my area for about three years.? I thought that was strange also, but I guess gas was an option. Just wondering what the replacement procedure for the engines is. Port engine is in bad shape and need replacement.?
