From my perspective, that's the point of the exercise: Taking the interesting logic (whiteouts, copy-up, etc) and implementing it in an environment where the OS-specific details are out of the way.

Doing so should make it much cheaper (in terms of man-hours) to prototype changes to that logic and experimentally determine the effects thereof.
