I've found, and I operate on the premise that nearly all drivers are courteous and considerate, and as a biker I make sure to communicate with them -- with my posture, positioning and trajectory on the street, hand signals, etc. I am considerate of their needs and likely moves, and I believe they appreciate that too. There will be *accidents*, though, and bikers on the street without helmets are multiplying many times the likelihood of very serious injury and possible death.
This touches on another reason why I've cut down on my biking-- bike design. Lord knows why the racing-bike design became so popular. I, for one, hate the design for everyday use. To look forward, I have to crane my neck way back, and it's difficult to keep a decent grip on the handlebars, manipulate the gearshifts and brakes, while keeping about a third of my bodyweight on the heels of my hands.
If I biked more often, I'd get a recumbent, which are a _much_ smarter design. But for now, most bike riders use bikes which make city riding a lot more dangerous.
