If you can't afford the local armed escort, you can always consider getting a dog. I have two 50-lb. dogs, and I have been struck by just how many people are completely afraid of them and give them a wide berth when I pass them on the sidewalk (even though the dogs' body language indicate they are not aggressive).

P.S. If you happen to be one of those folks that are afraid of dogs, a good tip when faced with passing a dog on a leash, say, is to break eye contact and make an exagerrated yawn. This says, in 'dog', "I'm not looking for any trouble here." On the other hand, staring the dog in the eyes, although it is our natural tendency when we are afraid, is actually a sign of aggression and will only make the dog more nervous. - -- Jon Moore "Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway."
