Most of my publication's readers are Philadelphia public-school parents or graduates, I reckon. I agree with you they differ from the average UC-list reader in that regard. For many of our neighbors, the School District's woes are strictly theoretical, things that just happen to other people -- "local people", as one of our brave social critics put it.

To have a child in the public-school system is to be a "local person". And that means (on UC-list) we are boring to the chief theme of UC-list, which is to talk about how bad Penn is.

But my publication's readers seldom think or talk or write about Penn -- whether it's bad or good. Neither do my kids' peers' parents. Neither do the readers of UCNeighbors, for that matter. Its badness or goodness doesn't drive most of our lives. Most Philadelphians have a different take on University City than UC-list. To most of us, universities are just one more force in town to be dealt with.

How would readers of the publication you write for feel about that?

I am just curious.

The lack of response on the UC Listserv is a good indicator people would not
wish to roll that way.

Of course I am.

Of course, I am a veteran of School District HSA meetings and
organizations. 90% of what I've been though, I shall never write about,
anymore than you will ever publish on this listserve more than a taste
of your experience in the System.

But I know what it means to teach. And I know what it means to have a
child that needs to be taught.
