"Why oh why does the magical invisible hand keep failing us like this!?"
I think that "invisible hand" never intended to serve us!
Privatizing public schools to bring better outcomes for students is absurd.
It is all union busting!!!!!!
Slashing the salaries of a large segment of society, the public school
teachers, and transferring that money to corporate fat cats has always been
the goal. The powerful proponents/deceivers don't believe privatizing will
boost student outcomes, and sound bites and overwhelming anger befuddle the
middle class.
As the plutocracy advocates wink at each other, the bonus is that first the
teachers of poor children; and then the students will finally be condemned
to a permanent underclass status through privatizing.
While teachers in poor districts have become the new "welfare queens" of the
corporate media, the entire issue of quality education has been completely
hijacked. Lazy teachers and the need to have high priced consultants come up
with more testing has completely overwhelmed the debate and been championed
by corporate media.
Consider Wilma's post a couple months back. A ranting and raving woman
offered her calculations to prove that public school teachers don't deserve
minimum wage. Where did such middle class anger and foolishness come from?
This has been the goal of corporate media and that "invisible hand."
With slick charts and the promise of fresh college graduates who will be
forced to accept slave wages in the short term, the angry public has
accepted this privatizing nonsense. Public education in poor areas has been
increasingly sabotaged for decades. If you take a car without an engine and
complain that the problem is the price of gas, you would look pretty silly.
Boosting outcomes and fixing the systems over time is not rocket science.
Much is understood by a few. As long as the shrinking middle class wants to
suck up to corporate deception and instead focus anger on the new welfare
queens, a permanent underclass for them and their children awaits too. So we
will continue to privatize public schools and completely ignore the data,
facts, and important issues.
Andrew, thanks for posting that important information which is so relevant
to this community,
Glenn

Privatizing them doesn't seem to work. "Outside managers" are no better
than
the public system, despite costing more. At least according to this
