>No it's not secure, but that may not be a big deal on a home network.

writable + guest access + wireless network is not a good combination
IMHO. Do you at least use WAP-AES? WEP is worthless and no
encryption...well might as well put a big neon sign that says: "I'm
open. Hack me!".
If that's the way you want to go, at the very least, only run the samba
service when you're about to copy new music onto your server from your
XP machine and turn it off when you're done.

I would HIGHLY recommand login on your linux machine and run the
smbpasswd command to setup a samba password as Michael suggested.
man smbpasswd if you have doubts about the syntax. It's very easy. And
then add the valid user option in smb.cnf.

I used to run samba on a server for a few years, it's a great tools and
there's many examples on how to set it up securely.
Now I run webdavs though. Since I already have apache running on my
server I let the https handle the encryption from my client to the
server and the digest authentication is also build in. I only have
apache to patch and it's a couple of ports that are not open anymore.
I'm not saying webdavs is better than samba it's just another solution
if you're more familiar with apache configuration. XP knows how to
connect to it too. For me, since I'm running Gentoo Linux it also means
that I don't have to recompile samba anymore so it's faster to maintain
the server.

I hope you'll add some security in your configuration. It's a LOT less
work to do that to try to patch holes after you've been hacked...
