When will there be a Debian (and or Ubuntu) .deb package available?

I have been trying to move away from Fedora Core 4 to either Debian or
Ubuntu, and without going into specifics, i've been having a lot of
problems relating to Perl that is basically stopping me as I can't get
slimserver to run/work under these distros.

It seems crazy that for an rpm based distro its a simple download and a
few minutes later you have a fully working slimserver, yet it would seem
that you have to jump through so many hoops to get it to work under
Debian/Ubuntu.

Why is this?

I will get it working eventually, it's just frustrating that there
isn't a .deb package available as well as a .rpm package.
