The 2.0 MIPS firmware does not allow telnet access.  Earlier versions
of the PPC firmware do, but not the later ones.  There is an open
sourcefirmware which gets around this problem and which many people
(including me) use with no problems.  However, it does involve hacking
the box, making it unreturnable.

I would suggest the Linkstation Wiki, which contains a lot of detailed
information about how to change / replace the firmware to get around
the restriction on telnet access.
