Check to make sure you're not bandwidth limiting.
Oh, and using Winamp or whatever with the stream.mp3 thingie will
mandate re-encoding to mp3.
Softsqueeze should support FLAC, but it may need a library or
something. Not sure, I only run softsqueeze at work and I bandwidth
limit that so no one notices my bandwidth sucking.
("I'm monitoring network connectivity by streaming music from home"
actually does work as an excuse... but I think I'd get yelled at for
maintaining 1Mbps. :))
