I definitely wouldn't want to push you into something you're not
comfortable with, but you don't really need to know Linux to install
slimserver on a KuroBox, or especially on a LinkStation (where the
trail is already well-blazed). Several people who don't know Linux have
succeeded at installing and running slimserver. In my case (with a
LinkStation), my unix experience wasn't essential, although it did
certainly raise the comfort level at a few points.

But you do definitely need to know how to follow instructions
carefully, and to remain calm and not go nuts on the keyboard if
something doesn't work on the first go.

If that still seems off-putting, consider Sheldon's advice about
getting a cheap Dell that you can stash away somewhere to serve your
music files. And though he mentioned using it as a linux server, you
could use Windows on it instead.

But if you really don't want to have a computer running to play music,
then Squeezebox might not be the solution for you. Of course, there is
SqueezeNetwork for internet radio, but I presume you want to play your
music as well.

Doing that without a computer? Seems like you're left with:

1) playing CDs,
2) using an iPod or other portable player with external speakers, or
3) investing big bucks in one of the systems from Olive (www.olive.us).
But before you do that, search this forum for some pretty damning
experiences other users have had with Olive systems.
