/sbin/ifconfig eth1 nnn.nnn.n.n
Any idea why?

No :-(. What happens if you run it manually?

On startup there is a section doing an automount which needs to have a
floppy drive connected. What file do I have to edit so that no checks
are made for the floppy drive as I want to disconnect it?

Just disconnect it. IMHO it won't try to connect to it again.

SlimCD (DSL) is accessing the floppy to look for a backup file to be restored. I've never used floppy drives in the machines I tested SlimCD with (mainly VMWare ;-), but real hardware, too), therefore I can assure you it will work without that drive.
