FAT32 is not an option for me - most of my drives are 400GB+ and all
contain FLAC audio from which my SB3 is served.

My ultimate intention is not to dual boot at all.  I have been wanting
to rid myself of Windows for a very long time but found myself married
to some MS apps and the Linux desktop & apps left a lot to be desired
in user interface terms (in my first foray into Linux text based cut
and paste wasn't a reality yet).  Throw in hardware
compatibility/driver issues and the transition never seemed quite
doable without severe compromise/pain. As an interim measure I'd like
to be able to dual boot and store my data on ext3 writeable from either
OS.  As I become comfortable with Linux replacements and/or
Crossover/Wine workarounds for my most used apps I'll eventually kill
the w2k3 partition and transfer all data to ext3 partitions.  There
will be some network based transfer.

Save your hair -- just buy VMWare Workstation. Run Linux in a VM on your Windows machine if you have a laptop, or run Windows in a VM on your Linux machine if you have a desktop. There are a lot of other virtualization solutions, some of which are free or cheaper.
